In terms of the application choice, we decided to go for apps that had command line interfaces to keep the test as similar across all three operating systems as possible. Other tests, such as dealing with spreadsheets, tend to feel a bit unrealistic. Our goal was to run tests that would push a system, so we opted for the three we chose. Our existing test run in Windows only, so the only way to benchmark a Mac or Linux PC is to install Windows on it, which means you just end up testing how fast the hardware is under Windows. With these new benchmarks we wanted to get tests that would run on Linux, Windows and OS X. I though I'd answer some of the questions. Thanks for all of the comments and the feedback here.
